BrightSpark FLN Classes

Foundational literacy and numeracy for children who need it most.

Many children in underserved communities fall behind in reading and maths. Not because they lack ability, but because they lack opportunity. BrightSpark changes that.

Our classes bring foundational literacy and numeracy to children who might otherwise be left behind. We meet each child where they are and help them build the skills they need to thrive.

Teaching at the right level (TaRL)

BrightSpark uses the Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) approach, a proven method developed by Indian NGO Pratham and used in over 20 countries.

The idea is simple. Instead of grouping children by age or grade, we group them by what they actually know. A child who cannot yet recognise letters learns alongside others at the same stage, regardless of age. This means no one is left behind, and no one is held back.

We assess each child when they join, group them by learning level, and reassess regularly. As they progress, they move to more advanced groups. It is focused, responsive, and it works.

Learning Through Play

Children learn best when they are engaged, curious, and having fun. That is why BrightSpark classes look different from traditional classrooms.

You will find children singing, clapping, playing games, and working with their hands. Learning is active, not passive. We use songs, stories, and group activities to make foundational skills stick.

A Training Ground for New Teachers

BrightSpark is not just about children. It is also where we train the next generation of teachers.

Aspiring educators join our classes to gain hands-on experience. They learn the TARL methodology, practice play-based teaching, and work directly with children under the guidance of experienced facilitators.

By the time they enter a classroom of their own, they have already taught. They are not just trained. They are prepared.

No Child Learns Hungry

Every BrightSpark class includes a snack. It's simple, but it matters. A hungry child cannot focus. By feeding the children we teach, we're tackling two challenges at once, supporting both quality education (SDG4) and nutrition (SDG2).

From Sand to Paper

1.

Tracing in Sand

Children begin by tracing letters and numbers in sand trays. This builds muscle memory and letter recognition without the pressure of getting it right on paper. They can try, erase, and try again. Learning feels safe.

2.

Forming with Bottle Caps

Next, children use bottle caps to form letters and numbers. This reinforces shape recognition and fine motor skills. It is hands-on, tactile, and it turns learning into something they can touch and arrange.

3.

Writing in Books

Only after children are confident with a letter or number do they write it in their books. By this point, they have already practiced many times. Writing feels like a natural next step, not a struggle.

BrightSpark launched in February 2025 in Dobi and Paiko, Gwagwalada, FCT Abuja.
Since then, we have been busy.
